Olive plant squalane

Olive plant squalane is a lipid compound derived from olive oil, widely used in cosmetic products for its moisturizing, nourishing and protective properties.

Chemical properties:

Squalane is a saturated hydrocarbon (C₃₀H₆₂), which means it is inert, stable, and unreactive.

It is colorless, odorless and has a light, non-greasy texture , making it easy to incorporate into cosmetic formulations.

Origin and Production

1. Natural source :

Olive squalane is obtained from olive oil , which naturally contains squalene , a lipid found in many vegetable oils and also in human sebum.

Squalene is then hydrogenated to transform it into squalane , a more stable and oxidatively resistant version.

2. Manufacturing process :

Squalene is extracted from olive oil through a purification process.

It then undergoes hydrogenation to become squalane, which makes it more stable and less susceptible to oxidation.

Difference between squalene and squalane

Squalene :

Natural form found in vegetable oils (such as olive oil) and human sebum.

Unstable and sensitive to oxidation, which limits its use in cosmetics.

Squalane :

Hydrogenated version of squalene.

Stable, resistant to oxidation and suitable for cosmetic use.

The benefits of olive plant squalane

  • Intense hydration

Olive squalane is an effective emollient that helps retain moisture in the skin. It forms a lightweight barrier on the skin's surface, preventing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and maintaining optimal hydration.

  • Skin compatible

Squalane is a naturally occurring substance in human sebum. Olive squalane, derived from olive oil, is very similar to this human version, making it easily absorbed by the skin without the risk of comedogenicity (pore clogging).

  • Nourishing and restorative

Rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids, it deeply nourishes the skin, helps restore its lipid barrier, and soothes irritation. It is particularly beneficial for dry, sensitive, or mature skin.

  • Light, non-greasy texture

Unlike some oils, olive squalane has a light, non-greasy texture, making it suitable for all skin types, including oily or combination skin. It absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy film.

  • Antioxidant and protective

It helps protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals (pollution, UV rays) thanks to its antioxidant properties. This helps prevent premature signs of aging, such as wrinkles and spots.

  • Soothing and anti-inflammatory

Olive squalane has soothing properties that can calm irritated, reddened skin, or skin prone to conditions like eczema or dermatitis.

  • Stability and long shelf life

Unlike squalene (its non-hydrogenated form), squalane is very stable and resistant to oxidation, which extends the shelf life of cosmetic products containing it.
